Antique oil on canvas by Belgian painter Henry (Henri) Schouten (c. 1857–1927), best known for his accomplished paintings of horses, cattle, sheep and rural life. Schouten studied at the Brussels Academy from 1876–1881 and was strongly influenced by celebrated Belgian animal painter Alfred Verwee. He exhibited in Brussels with L’Union des Arts and became particularly recognized for realistic animal subjects set within atmospheric pastoral landscapes.
This work depicts a white draft horse and chestnut horse beside a rustic fence. Signed lower right with an H. Schouten name plaque and presented in an elaborate gilt frame with scrolling foliate ornament. Frame shows age-related wear and losses as photographed.
