Attributed to Johann Heinrich Bleuler (Swiss, 1787–1857)
“Gegend im Oberhaslethal, Canton Bern”
Watercolor and gouache on paper | First half of the 19th century
Attributed to the esteemed Swiss landscape painter Johann Heinrich Bleuler, this bucolic scene captures the serene beauty of the Oberhasle Valley in the Canton of Bern. Rendered in delicate watercolor and gouache, the composition depicts two figures standing at the river’s edge, gazing across an expansive Alpine landscape dotted with livestock, timber structures, and cultivated land—hallmarks of Bleuler’s refined and atmospheric topographic style. A painted inscription in the lower margin reads “Gegend im Oberhaslethal, Canton Bern.” Though unsigned, the work strongly reflects Bleuler’s hand and is housed in a 19th-century giltwood frame behind glass.
Condition: The work shows notable tears and areas of repair, particularly along the lower and left edges, with some patching in areas of paper loss. Frame shows multiple repairs and some areas of loss of edging and guilt touch up.
Measurements: Length: 34 inches | Width: 26 inches
